As many of you already know, I am a self-employed software design consultant providing usability analysis, interaction design and information architecture services in Silicon Valley, which allows me the flexibility to spend much of my time and effort on TiddlyWiki. In any given month, I typically perform a wide variety of development, management, and support activities on behalf of the worldwide Tiddlywiki user community, including:
* TiddlyWiki Classic Core development<br>investigate and diagnose problems, identify workarounds, write new core code, "build scripts" and other development tools; create and implement cross-browser test plans; manage beta and full release processes; maintain default content for TiddlyWiki.com.
* GitHub administration<br>online source control, review and discuss open issues, evaluate and incorporate code changes (pull requests) submitted by others, schedule and track development milestones.
* TiddlyWiki and TiddlyWikiDev GoogleGroups moderator<br>approve first-time posters, block/ban spammers, read posts and respond with solutions/examples, download and diagnose problem documents, discuss new feature ideas and request for enhancements.
* Live TiddlyWiki Classic Clinic<br>weekly public online video chat sessions, live help... immediate solutions, demonstrations and walkthroughs, community "show-and-tell".
* TiddlyTools development and maintenance<br>create, debug and update plugins, scripts, themes/stylesheets, transclusions, etc., write documentation and examples, create and publish QuickStart(tm) ready-to-use documents.
In addition to these ongoing activities, new efforts will be needed in the near future to create tools, methods, and resources for helping users that are migrating from TiddlyWiki Classic to TiddlyWiki5. This includes re-designing and re-implementing popular TiddlyTools plugins for use with TiddlyWiki5, creating automated processes and interactive "wizards" for converting wiki syntax and macros, and writing references, tutorials, guidelines, examples and QuickStart documents for TiddlyWiki5.
As a supplement or replacement for formal InstitutionalFunding, a variety of informal community-based strategies have been suggested for raising the revenue needed to support the ongoing needs of the TiddlyWiki community
* Tips (spontaneous donations) and pledges (recurring monthly donations) are a direct way for people to show appreciation for help they have received, as well as continued support for ongoing assistance to themselves and the community as a whole.
* Pre-paid reserved time for private tutoring (individual instruction) and live, real-time, one-on-one help sessions through online video chat and screensharing are another way to raise funds.
* Bounties (rewards offered for solutions to specific problems) and consulting arrangements ("work for hire" opportunities within the community) encourage efforts to be focused on solving more complex problems and developing new custom documents and plugins. Private consulting also provides a trusted means (i.e, binding non-disclosure agreements) for getting help with documents that contain sensitive business or personal information not suited for posting as a public bounty.
CommunityFunding and CrowdFunding sources can only generate sufficient revenue when the overall user community is large enough to create a steady demand for valued services.

To determine a rough estimate of the size of the worldwide TiddlyWiki community, consider that the TiddlyWiki GoogleGroups discussion forum has about 5000 members. If we assume this represents only a small portion -- less than ten percent -- of a much larger "offline" community, then there are perhaps 50,000-100,000 people that use TiddlyWiki on a regular basis, and certainly many more people that have tried TiddlyWiki at least once. Other active TiddlyWiki communities of varying sizes also exist on most of the major social networks, such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, etc.

Another potential indicator of community size is the level of web traffic on popular TiddlyWiki sites, such as TiddlyTools.com -- my site for demonstrating and distributing my original TiddlyWiki plugins, scripts, themes, etc. -- which receives an average of 300-500 hits per day, and between 2500-3000 //unique// visitors per month (based on server analytics).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crowdfunding provides another resource for groups to pool their funds to finance a project. There are many different crowdfunding sites that provide tools for creating and managing a wide variety of fund raising "campaigns". Crowd funding sites have their own communities of regular contributors. In general, the larger crowdfunding services are able to raise more consistent donations across a diverse community of contributors. However, smaller services can sometimes be more effective at targeting a community of interest like TiddlyWiki, depending upon the style or purpose of the service (e.g., charitable fundraising vs. business development), as well as the specific fund-raising tools and methods they provide.

For example, http://Kickstarter.com and http://RocketHub.com use donation-based funding to support a wide variety of creative projects, but are not intended for businesses, charities, or personal fund raising campaigns. In contrast, http://Crowdrise.com is a place for funding for all kinds of worthwhile charities and inspiring causes, and http://Crowdfunder.com is a platform specifically for enouraging business development, with a supporting social network of investors, tech startups, small businesses, and social enterprises. Other sites, such as http://Indiegogo.com support fundraising campaigns for almost anything, including independent performing artists, hobbyists, personal finance needs, etc., and software maker http://Invested.in provide tools to create your own "private label" crowdfunding community to support donation-based fundraising for a specific group or niche in the market.

|Description|selectively disable TiddlyWiki's automatic ~WikiWord linking behavior|
This plugin allows you to disable TiddlyWiki's automatic ~WikiWord linking behavior, so that WikiWords embedded in tiddler content will be rendered as regular text, instead of being automatically converted to tiddler links. To create a tiddler link when automatic linking is disabled, you must enclose the link text within {}.
!!!!!Usage

You can block automatic WikiWord linking behavior for any specific tiddler by tagging it with<<tag excludeWikiWords>> (see configuration below) or, check a plugin option to disable automatic WikiWord links to non-existing tiddler titles, while still linking WikiWords that correspond to existing tiddlers titles or shadow tiddler titles. You can also block specific selected WikiWords from being automatically linked by listing them in DisableWikiLinksList (see configuration below), separated by whitespace. This tiddler is optional and, when present, causes the listed words to always be excluded, even if automatic linking of other WikiWords is being permitted.

Note: WikiWords contained in default shadow tiddlers will be automatically linked unless you select an additional checkbox option lets you disable these automatic links as well, though this is not recommended, since it can make it more difficult to access some TiddlyWiki standard default content (such as AdvancedOptions or SideBarTabs)

Most often, fund raising efforts for open source projects focus on obtaining "institutional funding" through a combination of formal sponsorships, grants, and donations of time and resources from government agencies, non-profit organizations, businesses and individuals. Unfortunately, new opportunities for institutional funding are very limited and highly competitive and most companies are unable or unwilling to absorb the expense of using employee time and company resources on non-business projects.

Despite these obstacles, the TiddlyWiki community has, in the past, been very fortunate in this regard. Beginning in 2006, regular financial support from the http://www.unamesa.org/ -- a non-profit organization financed primarily by large corporate contributions from http://rii.ricoh.com/ and http://www.bt.com/ -- enabled both Jeremy Ruston and myself to focus our time and effort almost exclusively on TiddlyWiki development.

Regrettably, UnaMesa's funding for TiddlyWiki was exhausted in early 2011. Since that time, BT has continued to provide significant technical resources to the TiddlyWiki community by hosting and operating the TiddlySpace servers, and Jeremy and I have been using our own financial resources to continue the work on TiddlyWiki.

There are several fast and easy ways you can make an immediate financial donation. Whether you can afford to donate just a small amount every now and then, or make a regular monthly pledge or even a generous lump-sum contribution, the amount of your donation should reflect your own sense of the real-world value of the benefits that you've actually received and expect to receive in the future.

{{smallform fine floatright borderleft center{<<tiddler MakeADonation##tips>>}}} If you've received direct help with a specific problem -- whether posted online, or through private email, or during a live TiddlyWiki Classic Clinic video chat session -- or, if my responses to others have helped you fix or enhance your document; or, if you just want to show your appreciation for my efforts, then please consider making occasional donations to my PayPal "tip jar".

{{smallform fine floatright borderleft center{<<tiddler MakeADonation##pledges>>}}} You can also make a recurring monthly pledge to help support continued assistance to the community as a whole as well as helping to fund future efforts, while also providing a more consistent and reliable long-term income stream over time. //Note: a PayPal account is only needed to subscribe for automatic monthly processing of pledges. If you do not have a PayPal account, you can still use a credit/debit card to manually make individual donations into my PayPal "tip jar".//

If you would like to avoid PayPal's service altogether, you can send a personal check, cashier's check or money order, or make a direct bank-to-bank wire transfer. Please contact me by email to request my mailing address and/or payment routing details (BICS/SWIFT code).

Regrettably, although self-employment provides considerable flexibility, it also means that my income varies greatly depending upon my current clients. As a result, cash flow is a constant concern, and maintaining a reliable, long-term revenue stream frequently takes priority over my ability to focus on TiddlyWiki. Of course, if revenue from community-based sources were enough completely cover my regular expenses, I would gladly devote my complete and undivided attention to providing full-time online assistance to the TiddlyWiki community as well as frequent updates to the TiddlyWiki Classic core code and improvements to TiddlyTools plugins.

In a typical month, my actual recurring costs (including rent, utilities, food, fuel, phone, internet, insurance, etc.) are approximately $2000 and, when available, another few hundred per month goes to out-of-pocket healthcare, clothing, household items, auto repairs, travel expenses, and savings for emergencies. An additional $500 per month is needed to pay quarterly income/self-employment taxes, for a total operating budget of $2500-$3000 per month.

For comparison, here are some basic economic statistics to consider:
* The 2013 Federal Poverty Guideline for a single person is $11,500 per year (about $1000 per month).
* IRS Form 433F calculates minimum monthly expenses for a single, self-employed person living in Silicon Valley between $2000-$3000 per month ($24,000-$36,000 per year) or more, based on national and regionally-averaged limits and/or actual costs.
* The 2012 Census Bureau data for single-earner median household income for the San Francisco Bay Area was approximately $47,700 per year (about $4000 per month).
Open source projects -- like TiddlyWiki -- combine the skills and resources of a community to enable rapid innovation of new software systems for the benefit of the entire group. There are many different ways for people to contribute to an open source project:
* being an active user and encouraging others to become users
* asking/answering questions online
* beta testing new releases
* sharing custom solutions
* writing documentation and tutorials
* developing new plugins, scripts, themes, etc.
In addition to active spontaneous participation, most open source projects also need some essential technical resources and the focused efforts of a small dedicated core group of "key contributors" to provide ongoing, coordinated project management (planning, development, testing, support, etc.) in order to succeed.

Unfortunately, providing these critical services on a consistent, continuous basis depends upon more than just active community participation. Whether it's paying for tangible items like domain registrations, servers, office space and internet connectivity, or providing a steady source of income for full-time project workers, the underlying problem is the same: real operating funds are needed in order to maintain the systems, services, and people that keep the project alive and thriving.
In order to cover my actual costs (or achieve any of the other statistical revenue targets, i.e., "poverty", "minimum expenses", or "median income"), a combination of income-earning activities will be needed. Here's some some of the possibilities:
* Fifty recurring pledges (just one percent of TiddlyWiki GoogleGroups members) at $30 per month would immediately produce a reliable base income of $1500
* Ten to twenty tips/bounties per month (about 2-4 per week), averaging $25 each, would raise another $250-$500
* Five hours of individual instruction or live one-on-one online chat help sessions per week (1 hour each weekday), at $25 per hour, could earn an additional $500
* Ten hours of private consulting services (diagnostics, debugging, etc.) at my standard rate of $50 per hour, would earn $500
* Two small development projects at $250 per 8-hour day (3 hours free per day!), would also earn $500
* One full week of dedicated custom development work would bring in $1000 (1 free day per week!).
Of course, the demand for these activities, and the amount of community-based contributions they generate, will vary over time; some months will see less income, some months more. Even so, if enough people donate over the long-term, then the combination of these relatively modest levels of activity should be able to produce a sufficient, sustainable level of income.
